Along with this first American edition of Persuasion that Barbara Winn Adams donated to the Goucher College Library is a letter from a bookseller, I.R. Brussel. In the letter, dated April 4, 1947, Brussel relays that he considers Jane Austen the “rarest” of English authors who wrote in the 19th century and that her American editions are even more difficult to obtain than her English editions.
