A highlight of Alberta Burke’s Jane Austen Collection at Goucher College Library is a set of 10 notebooks that include “anything which is in anyway related to Jane Austen.” (Alberta Burke in a letter to Helen Hayes Theatre on November 24, 1940)
These black and white marbled notebooks are all labeled “Pride and Prejudice and Other Material Relating to Jane Austen” and are arranged mostly chronologically. Each item pasted in the notebook is annotated with the origin of the item, the date, and oftentimes a notation from Burke. The items in the notebooks include correspondence, news articles, broadcast scripts, magazine stories, advertisements, playbills, and more. These 10 notebooks are completely unique to the Jane Austen Collection at Goucher College.
In honor of Jane Austen’s 250th birthday and Alberta Burke’s 50th anniversary of her donation to the college, all 10 notebooks are now available digitally.
By clicking on the notebook, a PDF of the entire notebook and contents are available online. The scans of the notebooks were made as exact digital replicas. The first image of the open page is how one would initially view the notebook and each image after includes the foldouts or inserts that pertain to the opened page.
