Pride and Prejudice: A Novel in Three Volumes

Jane Austen
Printed in London for T. Egerton, 1813

Alberta H. Burke purchased this first edition in 1937 for £15. This set, bound in maroon half Morocco with gold tooling and raised bands, shows the wealth of the original owner. Early printers sold volumes in boards, and it was the responsibility of the owner to get the book bound. Many had their entire library bound in a uniform way so they all matched.

The three volumes are housed in the Special Collections stacks in a handcrafted acid-free box measured specifically to the set.
